September 15
I hit a wall today. Could barely get out of my sleeping bag. Most of my food was gone, except for a few bars that added up to only a thousand calories (I burn about 6,000 on an average day). My body was in starvation mode, yearning for fuel, a complete energy bankruptcy. Every two miles, I'd stop and stare at the ground and have to whip myself back into motion. I was worn thin, an old mule. It took all day to get just twenty miles. Thank the lord that Skykomish was my destination -- after hitching into town, I found a restaurant, ordered a salad, a double cheeseburger, a milkshake, and a beer. When I was finished with that, I ordered another double cheeseburger.
